Greek quarter
Melbourne has the world's third-largest Greek-speaking population, a fact that won't seem so surprising when you visit the area around Lonsdale Street between Swanston and Russell streets.
A taste of the islands
Wander through Melbourne's Greek precinct and experience a treasure trove of mouth-watering Grecian delights, day or night. Stop by Stalactites, the all night local favourite, or sample the traditional menus in restaurants like Tzindos Taverna, Dion Restaurant or Medallion Cafe. Savour chargrilled meats, fresh salads, sweet pastries and sumptuous seafood, along with all manner of authentic dishes to satisfy any Greek-loving gourmand. Coffee addicts will find a good traditional brew, but brace yourself – it's served up strong and bitter. Be sure to drop into International Dienthes Cake Shop for baklava, nougat, halva, loukimi and the most delicious almond coconut slice.
Ever-present Yanni
Stroll along Lonsdale Street and revel in the sights, sounds and smells of Grecian Melbourne. Linger in grocery stores, listen to the strains of Yanni being played at full blast on outdoor speakers, or spend a lazy hour chatting to the old men playing 'tavli' in the outdoor cafes. Enjoy Greek-Australian experiences while browsing bookstores, music shops, specialist travel agents and at least one shop that sells nothing but elaborate Christening gowns.
Music in the streets
If you're in town in March check out the award-winning Greek Antipodes Festival when it takes to the streets. Be a part of one of the world's largest celebrations of Greek culture outside Greece, featuring art and craft, food stalls, dancing, music, street theatre, kids' activities and visiting Greek artists.
